My husband recently got asked by a prospective employer if anyone has ever questioned his integrity. He said that what immediately came to mind was to answer, "Yes," but he figured the interviewer wouldn't understand what it's like to stopped when your'e twelve and asked if you've stolen your bike. He knew the interviewer wouldn't get that as a black man in this country, your integrity is questioned every time you walk out the door. And it does eat away at him, beyond a doubt. I sometimes feel like I can see it happening.

This made me feel very sad, that you should feel this way about being stopped by the very people who the government employ to uphold the rights of law abiding citizens such as yourself.

It lead me to wonder if this does not distort the crime statistics somewhat. If more black people than white people are stopped and observed it makes sense that more black criminals will be caught and more white criminals won't be seen breaking the law. Isn't this obvious to those members of the police force who behave this way and that acting this way isn't going to inspire confidence in them?

This quote from the Gleanings is both profound and provocative to me:
Is it on your food and your drink that ye pride yourselves, on the riches ye lay up in your treasuries, on the diversity and the cost of the ornaments with which ye deck yourselves? I can't help but think that Baha'u'llah was speaking to 21st century Americans with that quote. Every day, at least for me, is a test to remain unaffected by rampant consumerism and the attending low self esteem that comes from not achieving the so-called American ideal. As an American African, I'm already unacceptable as an ideal by society's standards. It doesn't matter how much I achieve, as you have illustrated with this post with your encounter with the police, Phillipe. What this points out to me is that my efforts to become everything this country says I should be are fruitless.

So it's all about becoming what God has ordained for me, even though the "American dream" is reinforced every time I turn on the television or log onto my computer. Thank God for revealing the prayers for steadfastness to the Blessed Beauty!
