I remember so many of my students in Compton would get stuff like pinkeye and would have no where to go to get a prescription for medicine.  They didn't have a doctor, didn't have insurance, didn't get regular checkups.  Parents claimed religious objection to shots so the kids wouldn't have to get hassled about vaccinations.  And when something serious happened to one of them, the girl's family snuck her to Mexico to get treatment.&lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;Your post also makes me think about how kids regularly brought hot cheetos and doritos to school for snacks and yet there was no PE unless I took my students out to run.
