This is quite upsetting to me, especially since my son lives in nearby Boston. Hate has been and is brewing in our midst, and it doesn't take much to provoke its hideousness to emerge from the depths of ignorance and despair. I sensed that the upcoming nomination of a Black man for the highest singular position of power in this country would bring forth both the best and the absolute worst in America. It's sad because it's as if the worst has to happen before we can take a surgical look at ourselves, and examine our disparate parts. I've feared that such examination would involve bloodshed, but then again, this is America. Our history is awash in blood.

Two weeks ago, I told my son, who lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, to be careful. He has been dating women of all different races, and as far as I'm concerned, being a little too cocky as far as paying attention to where he is going with his dates. Maybe I'm being overprotective. Maybe I'm being cynical. Or maybe I'm just another Black woman from a very long line of Black women who doesn't want to see her son become another victim of a cowardly racist gang like the one who attacked that young man in Marshfield. I hope to God I'm wrong.
