I am raising, along with my wife, our 10-year-daughter. Mom is Dominican, I am white. She attends an "elite" private school (which is why I am at work today!)
Stories: last night, after a long playdate, my daughter had an abortive attempt to accept an invitation to kids night at the local country club with an upper middle class African American family whose daughter she was in school with last year. It did not work out since they were running late and my daughter had the wrong clothes on (no jeans). I was able to text message the dad about "sorry, etc, next time, thanks, etc" and our daughter needed Mom's comforting for a bit, but we survived.
The irony is this is a black family that lives 2 notches above us economically (I don't have a prayer of affording a country club membership-not sure I would know what to do with it). In our interactions it is confusing to be BOTH a member of the historically oppressing majority AND the laggard economically. My Baha'i ideals in these situations (and my wife's solid groundedness) become extremely stabilizing. Ah, how full is the world of illusion!

My daughter is now 6 but we adopted her when she was 15 mths. She nearly died 4 times before we met and once since. But she's all go now! Here's a picture from when she was 4....
