I begin to weep. I hate to admit this, but I rarely cried in church, mostly because I was those kids who thought folks gettin' happy was hysterically funny. But the drums just cuts through all the layers of sarcasm, self-consciousness, and rationalizations and melts the heart. They are powerful, spiritually uplifting instruments to me. I can't wait until we can hear some drumming out West at Bosch. I will definitely be in the house!

About this quote:

"As we neither feel nor acknowledge any distinction between the duties and privileges of a Bahá'í, whoever he may be, it is incumbent upon the negro (note: the Baha'i Writings use the terms common to when they were written) believers to rise above this great test which the attitude of some of their white brethren may present. They must prove their innate equality not by words but by deeds."

The old part of Angela that is still in the process of becoming a Baha'i (and recognizes that it is lifelong process that didn't end with my declaration card)has a bit of trouble with the word "prove". Now this is the old me, shaped and formed by this society, African-American culture and various other influences. That part of me says, "What? I don't have to prove NOTHIN' to NOBODY! Folks better prove somethin' to ME, after everything my ancestors went through!"

And the Baha'i side of me smiles and quietly accepts that the loud "old style" Angela is just having a screaming tantrum on her way out. It's best to just let her have her say, then move on with helping the friends do the awesome tasks that has been set before all of us by Baha'u'llah. I have had more years as loud Angela that Baha'i Angela. It's only natural, (at least I hope so), that she would howl in protest as her replacement takes over.

I hope that doesn't read like the rantings of someone suffering from disassociative identity disorder!
